OLD REVIEW: Deadly Creatures

Post by Sparky the chu on Fri Jan 22, 2010 10:34 am

READ THIS BEFORE THE REVIEW: since in the past I posted other reviews with the wiikly news reports I'm gonna post them here too, so that you won't miss them. I'll post an old one each day until we are caught up with the current ones ^^

Keep in mind that those reviews are old...I did this one almost one year ago, so my writing and my way to explain things may have been quite a bit worse back then (and were also shorter than now), but I figured it would be interesting ^^

WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Deadly Creatures
Genre: Beat'em up (with bugs :3)
when I saw this game for the first time I was surprised, but at the
same time curious. an action game entirely based on two small critters:
a scorpion and a tarantula. Nice idea, something that wasn't tried
before, or at least not many times.

this game is certainly not for who is scared to death by bugs, because
it got lots of them, along with gruesome battles between small, creepy
critters XD now, lets talk about it in detail. Graphically-wise this
game is slightly above the average wii game, with very good models of
both the main characters and the enemies. the background varies a lot,
changing from bland, empty areas (we're in the desert afterall) to
really suggestive looks, for example the bush of thorns that becomes an
entire forest of creepy, spiky branches, kind of reminding you of a
dark, fantasy setting...or the den of the spiders, that's one very
suggestive sight too. so yeah, despite the desert setting the
backgrounds will change a lot, except for a few areas of the levels
that are just empty or areas you'll revisit a couple of times during
the game.

gameplay-wise the game does its job too. The tarantula and the scorpion
have their own set of moves to learn while playing trough the game
(they also have different HP and attack stats...tarantula haves a lot
of defence but lacks on attack, while scorpion is the other way around)
and defeating the enemies, while earning 'predator points' that work
like experience for the creepy crawlers. the attacks and the combos are
different and can be executed with a mix of the a button and certain
movements of the wiimote (for example, if you want to topple an enemy
over attack it, then flick the wiimote upward...it's like a bug-version
of the uppercut X3). the battles rarely get repetitive too, since,
despite having to re-encounter the same kinds of enemies during the
entire game there is enough variety to keep the battles interesting,
and in many cases also quite difficult at normal mode, you'll have to
be very careful about the timing of your hits and dodges, you can't
just waggle the wiimote, especially if more than one enemy is on the
field. also, little detail, the scorpion and the tarantula have one
special ability...the scoprion can shield itself from most of the hits,
while the tarantula can block the enemies with its web once you learn
the move

the level setting is also different between the tarantula and scorpion
ones...while the tarantula's levels are focused on crawling around
walls, floors and roofs to find a road trough the level, so more
focused on explorations the scoprion's levels are more combat-focused.

the sound: while you won't download the soundtrack I'm sure you'll find
the soundtrack of the game interesting, since it changes depending by
the situations, taking a faster pace when enemies appear and stuff like
that. the story, as surprising as it may appear, is interesting X3
during the entire game, while you simply try to survive by battling
against predators and hunting for food you'll watch the tale of two
humans looking for a certain treasure, left there by a supposedly dead
man. this game, not only lets you realize how scorpions and tarantulas
aren't really bad guys, but just critters trying to survive like all
the others, but will also tell you how the events caused by such small
creatures can influence the life of the larger beings.

noticeable flaws: the framerate doesn't always work right, but it
doesn't get in the way of the gameplay, and sometime the camera angle
might confuse you in the tarantula levels.

the game is not TOO long, though I wouldn't suggest a rental if you
don't have enough time in a weekend, because each level takes quite a
bit to be finished, especially the ones in the middle of the game that
can get very long and also difficult to complete due to the game not
being too easy on gamers :3 so, if you don't mind or love bugs, you
like gruesome games and you also are looking for something different
I'd suggest you to give a shot to Deadly Creatures ^^

here are a few screens:

SCARY BABY FACE IS WATCHING YOU >:3

Scorpion is gonna use a fatality

I know that we're voraphiles, but if you want to win the game you'll have to defeat this snake X3

spiderspider! spiderspider! friendly neighborhood spiderspider!

one of the suggestive views of the game
