What Are Some Of Your Favorite Strategies?

Post by foxyumbreon on August 4th 2010, 1:09 pm

I got the idea for this thread after seeing the "What do you say is the best Pokemon" thread posted by voreloverman. Put simply, it'll just be a thread for posting some of your favorite strategies you've either come up with yourself, or have seen, for individual Pokemon. Please try to at least include the Pokemon, its ability, its item, and its move-set. Other details are welcome as well, but not necessary. You can also explain how the strategy is used if you like. And they can be ones you like for any reason, be them being good, or you just have fun using them, or whatever reason you have. Here's a few of my favorites I've made.

Pokemon: Breloom
Ability: Poison Heal
Item: Toxic Orb
Moveset: Protect, Spore, Focus Punch, Drain Punch
Strategy: Except for maybe the fact that I always use Protect on the first turn to gain healing, and immunity to other status effects, as a result of Poison Heal and the Toxic Orb, there's not really much to explain.

Pokemon: Smeargle
Nature: Anything that boosts speed.
Ability: Own Tempo
Item: Focus Sash
Moveset: Spore, Spikes, Stealth Rock, Agility

Pokemon: Butterfree
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Compound Eyes
Item: Wide Lens
Moveset: Whirlwind, Sleep Powder, Supersonic, U-Turn
Strategy: With both Compound Eyes, and the Wide Lens, Sleep Powder and Supersonic don't really have to worry about their naturally low accuracy from what I've experienced with this strategy. I'll typically use Sleep Powder on the first Pokemon, then blow it away with Whirlwind. The next Pokemon I'll hit with Sleep Powder as well, but then also hit it with Supersonic to debilitate it even further. U-Turn is then used to switch to a more efficient Pokemon for dealing with the opponent, since Butterfree is rather weak statistically. Not the best strategy in the world, but I have a blast using it.

Pokemon: Forretress
Ability: Sturdy
Item: Focus Sash
Moveset: Toxic Spikes, Spikes, Stealth Rock, Explosion

Re: What Are Some Of Your Favorite Strategies?

Well My favorite strategy is to Shuckle sweep in double battles, though it is very Very hard to pull off.

It involves my Shuckle (maxed out defense and special defense evs)
And my Slowking (also high defenses)

An the first turn I tell my Sloking to use trick room and my Shuckle to use Power Trick (swaps the defense and offensive stats of the user). And since trickroom is in affect my shuckle always goes first and lays waste to all with his massive attack power.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some of my other strategies are a bit more complicated and tend to work better (yet still in double battles).
I send out an Xatu and Frosslas. I tell my Xatu to use Skill Swap on my Frosslas but then switch out the frosslas for my slaking. it would be unwise to try and use fighting moves because they don't affect ghost types such as fross lass and I may or may not use this strategy. WELL anyways back to the plot, the Skill Swap is stilll used but now on my Slaking, he louses his truant (only attack ever other turn) ability and is just as strong as a grondon/kyogre total base stat wise.
Pokémon: Starmie
Nature: Any
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: Everything into both defences with some HP and speed.
Item: Leftovers (if possible)
Moveset: Cosmic Power, Recover, Psychic, Brine.
Strategy: Switch into a resisted move, cosmic power 5-6 times, recover to gain back health. Switch out to heal status' (with natural cure).
A super tank, nothing will ever KO it in under 5 super effective moves (and by then you'll have healed the damage with recover).
Watch out for critical hits.
Watch out for Blissey.
I made a really retarded strategy with my magnezone. I've only been able to actually make work twice... the rest either failed, or I never use him.
Item: a Berry that heals (in the case of mine, a Wiki)
Moveset:
Substitute
Charge Beam
Recycle
Double Team
substitute and double team until you reach max evasiveness. your opponent will be attacking your sub. when you run low on health, the berry activates and you gain health. now you can use recycle as a substitute recover move! then charge beam till you get full special attack.
since magnezone is a steel type, it's very hard for many pokemon to kill the sub. obviously this doesn't work if the opponent has either a fighter move, a fire move, or a ground move.
mah SS team... :3
Re: What Are Some Of Your Favorite Strategies?
Post by foxyumbreon on August 4th 2010, 7:48 pm
Here's a few more of mine that I recalled after checking my game.
Pokemon: Persian
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Technician
Item: Muscle Band
Moveset: Fake Out, Fury Swipes, U-Turn, Screech
Pokemon: Scyther
Nature: Something that boosts either Speed or Attack (The higher attack power would be a nice plus against more durable pokemon, but at the same time the strategy won't work if the opponent's pokemon is faster than Scyther).
Ability: Technician
Item: Focus Sash
Moveset: Endure, Reversal, Aerial Ace, Swords Dance
Strategy: Start with Swords Dance to gain an attack boost. Then, depending on Scyther's condition, do one of three things. If it seems Scyther will still be fine for another attack based on its health, and the opponent's actions, use Swords Dance again. If it looks like the opponent will finish Scyther off this turn, then use Endure. If Scyther is already down to 1 HP, then begin to attack with Reversal (or Aerial Ace if Reversal won't be effective due to type). I chose Scyther for this strategy instead of a fighting-type (I believe Hitmonlee can learn the three main moves for it) because Scyther was the fasted pokemon I could find that learns the three main moves for the strategy to work.
Pokemon: Any of the starters, or any pokemon that has the Swarm ability (preferably a fast one)
Nature: Modest, Adamant, or something that boosts speed without decreasing attack or special attack (depending on which will be used)
Ability: Blaze, Torrent, Overgrow, or Swarm
Item: Petaya Berry or Liechi Berry
Moveset: Substitute, an offensive move to compliment the desired stat (attack or special attack) as well as the desired type based on ability, two more genericly useful moves.
Strategy: This moveset was concocted when I was trying to come up with a means of deliberately utilizing the abilities of the starters. The idea is to use Substitute to drop the health of the pokemon down low enough to activate both the ability, and the held berry, without simply fainting from the enemy attacks, and then attack with the increased power using the selected move that compliments the boost from the berry, as well as the boost from the ability. The other two moves should be selected as moves capable of handling situations where the main strategy won't be effective against the opposing pokemon.
Psychic (on a psychic type) does almost as much damage as hyperbeam and doesn't make you wait a turn.
Re: What Are Some Of Your Favorite Strategies?
Post by Houndoomed on August 26th 2010, 8:36 pm
Alrighty, here's a new one I came up with, for a Persian.
Persian
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Technician
Item: None (because of Thief)
Attacks:
Fake Out
Hypnosis
Thief
Toxic/U-turn
First, use Fake Out, unless the opponent has Inner Focus. You just wasted the Persian if you try to Flinch a Dragonite or an Alakazam. After you get your free damage in (if possible), you use Hypnosis. Which Persian can only get as an Egg move, by the way, via breeding with a Glameow or Purugly. At this point, use Thief (unless you suspect your opponent of holding a Choice item); you'll deprive them of an item that they probably need, such as Leftovers. Of course, you'll take it from either the sleeping Pokemon, or whatever they switch in to replace it. At this point, use Toxic if they did switch, and you've put one Pokemon to sleep and poisoned another. Persian will most likely be KO'd at this point. If you lack Toxic, just use U-turn after using Thief, so that you have a chance at using Hypnosis again later, once that other Pokemon wakes up. If you lack U-turn and they didn't switch after being put to sleep, just switch at this point as well. There's really nothing else Persian can do on the sleeping Pokemon.
Re: What Are Some Of Your Favorite Strategies?
Arceus
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Multitype
Item: Lum Berry / Silk Scarf
Attacks: Extremespeed, Swords Dance, Earthquake, Shadow Claw
Arceus' natural bulkiness generally means he's able to take a couple hits before going down, and without a plate, STAB Extremespeed is up to a base power of 120. Complimented with one to three Swords Dance will have him boasting more than enough attack score to take out anything in the way with priority. Ghosts dare not to switch in with Shadow Claw, as few outspeed him, and Steel is even more reluctant, only Skarmory and Bronzong avoiding Earthquake and still threatening OHKO's off a +6 Extremespeed.
-----
Kyogre
Nature: Modest
Ability: Drizzle
Item: Choice Scarf
Attacks: Water Spout, Thunder, Surf, Ice Beam
Okay, let's get serious. Water Spout boasts a massive 150 base attack power, and after Drizzle causing rain and through a STAB boost pretty much means that Kyogre will be annihilating anything without priority attacks, 2HKOing even Blissey. Kyogre's moderate speed is pressed up to Deoxys levels with Choice Scarf, almost ensuring it to go first with catastrophic results. Follow up with a Swift Swim core team for much fun.
-----
EDIT: Noting those to be Uber, here are some more user friendly strategies.
Kingdra
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Swift Swim
Item: Lum Berry
Attacks: Dragon Dance, Outrage, Waterfall, Iron Head
Now, strategies are nice, but sometimes it helps to just have bigger guns than everyone else on the block. After one Dragon Dance, Kingdra will be regarded very, very warily by your foe, and two will have your opponent checking his Pokemon for Focus Sashes. Outrage after two dances will kill. Now, while I recommend sticking to Waterfall in case you opponent switches in a Steel type while you're locked into Outrage, if something absolutely needs to die, accept no substitutes. Stopping this is difficult. With only one weakness and rounded stats, it generally takes two to three hits from anything to actually waste Kingdra, so switch him in on a foe you're pretty sure isn't packing any dragon moves, and dance the night away. Foes using status effect moves like Thunder Wave and Will O' Wisp will be saddened to find the Lum berry, but for those of you that think this berry situational in its use will be delighted to find that even if your foes don't opt to rip you apart with status effects, it does clear away the confusion following Outrage.
Happy sweeping.
Five Smeargles all with Explosion and varied other moves. And one level one hundred Magicarp just so you can psyche them out. Doesn't make you win, but does make for funny opponent reactions. Very Happy
I'll throw in a couple more. I have lots of stuff, since I sometimes even have more fun just coming up with strategies than I do actually playing the games.
Drapion
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Sniper
Item: Scope Lens
Moveset: Aqua Tail, Night Slash, Cross Poison, Toxic Spikes (Other stuff could be used in place of Aqua Tail and Toxic Spikes, like Agility or Swords Dance or something. Just listing what I used.)
Strategy: Pretty much a luck-reliant sweeper, attempting to take as much advantage as it can of its Sniper ability, boosting the damage of critical hits.
Beedrill
Nature: Jolly or Adamant (I chose Jolly)
Ability: Swarm
Item: Focus Sash
Moveset: Endeavor, X-Scissor, Swords Dance, Agility
This was just an attempt to effectively use Beedrill, since it's one of my favorite pokemon and I've always found it a real shame that it's so weak. The only tricky part would be knowing which to use between Agility and Swords Dance. If you send it out though against an opponent that Beedrill is quite resistant to though such as a fighting-type, it may be possible to boost more before having to worry about fainting. Hard to say really. It's only a theory at this time that I haven't had a chance to test yet.
