The reputation isn't really for anything, just numbers there. People will can either stay neutral about your post, show they like it and vote it up (which increases your rep) or show they dislike it and vote it does (which lowers it)

It seems that some people use it as a tool to attack others though, so I just suggest not paying it too much and not let it go to your head if you have more rep than others |3
