CREATE: new trailer

WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Sonic the hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (Wiiware game)
Genre: 2D platformer
Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: Nintendo
Time spent on the game: around 6 hours

I was planning to review Lost in Shadow for this report, but since the game is longer than I expected I decided to do this review instead :3

The game that lots of fans always asked for, the new chapter (or rather the first episode of it razz) of the original sonic series. The game takes off right after the end of Sonic & Knuckles, with Eggman wanting to get rid of Sonic once for all revisiting some of his old machinery, obviously revised for the occasion. Is the first episode of this new Sonic series off to a good start ? Lemme show ya :3

The goal of the game is to take inspiration from the old gameplay of the original Genesis Sonic games and bring it into this new game. The graphic look is pretty clean and colourful, having a bit of Sonic Advance-vibe to it, same for the Sonic model, made in 3D cel-shading for the occasion. I saw fans liking or hating the style of the game, so it's all down to your opinion if it works for you or not. Beside this I think the game looks bright and clean and does its work, also managing to not make you miss the HD versions, unless you prefer HD, in that way the choice goes elsewhere X3

The framerate also works quite well and went down just a couple of times during my playthrough. One thing I could note is the fact that the levels look like new versions of certain old sonic levels. While this doesn't bother me at all since it's the first episode I'd like to see them trying something more original with the designs of the next episode.

The gameplay is pretty much like the old one, with the adding of the homing attack, wich, surprisingly, doesn't ruin the gameplay at all, instead the developers put situations in wich the homing attack is certainly useful to go forward and others in wich simply running and jumping is preferred. Old-school players might need to get used to the use of the homing attack but it's no biggie. What I noticed though are a few slight differences in the game physics, even if they're minor things and the game works fairly well. There ARE glitches in the game, but unless you don't purposely look for them you'll likely stumble into them just two or three times and rarely they'll be game-breaking ones.

The level design and flow is a kind of hybrid between old genesis levels and sonic advance ones, giving to every act a certain “theme” or danger to face. For example, in the casino zone there's a level themed around cards and one themed around cannons that will let you reach other areas. A neat trick to differentiate the acts if you ask me, gives more identity to each part of the level instead of just dividing the level in two/three parts. The boss fights have their own addition too...Despite all of them being new versions of old bosses (the last one will probably make you fangasm ;P), after a while you fight against the bosses they'll go in a sort of “rage” mod, suddenly becoming way more dangerous and challenging. A clever way to surprise the old school gamers, I could say XD made me go “OMGWHAT?!” a couple of times X3

The levels and the bosses are challenging enough and they obviously get harder the more you go forward in the game. I could say that the level of challenge is just about right, not too easy, but not overly frustrating. Same goes for the special stages to get the chaos emeralds...while those sessions CAN be quite frustrating, you just have to be very careful and be ready to press start and press on “try again” before you bump into those evil red spheres. The controls of the special stages are all via d-pad and they work fairly well, especially once you got down the physics of the thing.

One thing some could dislike is how, once you do the first act of every level you automatically unlock the rest of the acts in the level select. Sure, no one is forcing you to go forward right away, but it could ruin the surprise effect a little.

The soundtrack goes after a full Genesis style and I quite liked most of the tunes used for each act (every act haves a different tune as well) Some of them aren't as memorable as the old genesis one, but this is defenitely the right way to follow. What I think would need some more work, if they want to follow the genesis style, are the boss battle themes. I'm sure you all remember how the old boss themes were quite epic, with a particular style that expressed the danger that just a boss can give off. In this case, unfortunately, the boss themes are either a bit too “kiddy” or they go into too much of a loop, becoming repetitive quite soon.

The storyline follows the style of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, with nearly no cutscenes. I can't help but hope for something that follows more the storyline of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, with an actual connection between every level. The storyline doesn't have a big weight over the game though, so it's just a matter of how the developers will want to go with the new episodes.

Overall the games is a very good throwback to old-school Sonic games with a few welcome additions, like the themes for each act and the homing attack playing a nice role in the gameplay. The game is quite on the short side, having just 4 levels with three acts each (not including the boss fight) and the final level. What they'd need to work more are the physics of the game to get rid of the glitches overall and to simulate better the feeling of speed that the old Sonic games gave you. The platforming sessions were spot-on. Then if they can make up a more epic boss theme I'll be totally happy. For now this is a very good step in the right direction and I look forward to see what they'll do with the new episodes, also hoping they'll be more creative and not afraid to come up with their own level styles. This game is recommended to every old-school sonic fans and to people who never played the old games too, to get a first taste of what we played back in the day Smile
