Unova: where the good Bug types have been hiding, apparently.

Post by Houndoomed on March 19th 2011, 8:45 pm

I -hate- bugs. Hate 'em. So, I was quite surprised to find several new Bug Pokemon vying for places on my party. I mean... seriously.

The ones I was looking at are all special attackers:
Accelgor: Holy crap, it's a ninja. It's like Ninjask, with more combat capability. Acid Spray + Giga Drain is awesome.
Galvantula: Spider. D: But... sheesh, it's actually pretty good. Again... Electoweb + Electro Ball = combo.
Volcarona: ... Sweet Jesus. It almost looks like a legendary. It even has a signature move!

On the physical side?
Escavalier: Accelgor's tankish counterpart. Think Forretress... with combat capability. Lots of it.
Scoliopede: Okay, I actually have no idea. It certainly -looks- impressive. And it's faster than it looks. I learned the hard way. >.>
Durant: How does that fire anteater thing even manage to eat it, aside from the type advantage?

Seriously, the only one that seems really unimpressive is that Bug/Grass thing.

And even then... Genesect makes up for it. I'm definitely getting one of those, when it's released.

... Good job making the joke type actually good! o.o

I feel the same way in regards to thinking it's a good job that they finally made them good. I've been very annoyed at how the bug-type always felt more like a joke than anything. It was like the type was there, but Nintendo really didn't care that it was. Then suddenly when I saw the new pokemon and saw the stats on some of the bug-types, I was like, "Wow, it took about 13 years, but it seems like they're finally giving a rat's ass about the bug pokemon, and in a big way." They still have a long way to go though if they want to catch up with the vast number of incredible pokemon for all the other types. Every other type has a few generations of a head start.

I have to agree... Finally, some sweet new bugs! Galvantula and Scolipede especially already are on my team, and several others are still possible...

I noticed just how awesome the bug types are in 5th gen too.

I've only really liked one or two bug types before now (Mothim, Ledian, Ariados) so it's sort of a surprise to me too.

Aw, c'mon - there have been some very good bugs since 4th generation.

Scyther was great originally and is still fairly useful, Pinsir became valuable once he got proper bug attacks (also mold breaker), Forretress and Scizor are in fact still utilized in /epic play/ due to the potency of their stats and typing, Heracross was banned in the Japanese OU metagame... Ninjask and Yanmega got a lot of use (Especially the latter as a raw beatstick), and armaldo can do quite a bit.

Also, uh, Arceus tends to be bug, but that's neither here nor there.

That said, though, I also am impressed by the new bugs - they're quite neat mechanically. A lot of 5th gen are very /interesting/ types and combinations mechanically.
