Theory On Ditto
Okay, soooo... Ditto. Breeds with anything, can't do much other than Transform. Fun times! So yeah, getting started.
I'm thinking Ditto could possibly be a failed prototype of Mewtwo... sorta. Rather, it'd be the the test round for modifying Mew's DNA for the cloning process. Before the scientists worked on making the "ultimate Pokemon," they'd need a control to make sure their methods of modifying the DNA worked. Mew had one ability no other Pokemon had: transformation. So, they isolated the genetic coding for that particular ability as their test.
The clone made using only that particular information, sure enough, yielded a pink blobby creature capable of doing nothing but transforming into other Pokemon. That is, Ditto. The scientists all slap high-fives and such, then get the little freak out of their lab so they can get down to the SERIOUS sciencing of making a clone with high offensive abilities, instead of this useless transforming crap.
Lastly, note the locations Ditto could originally be found. A few routes, nowhere too interesting... and then Cerulean cave. Same place as Mewtwo. In Yellow, plus FireRed and LeafGreen, it's also available in Pokemon Mansion, where Mewtwo was created. So, perhaps? The scientists made their prototype, put it away somewhere, and got to work. Ditto managed to reproduce asexually, being a creature composed of goo. Since it was made of such a limited DNA sequence, it could simply duplicate itself. When Mewtwo was created, it decided to take a few of the Dittos with it when it blew the lab and took to hiding in Cerulean Cave. Other Ditto ended up staying behind in the destroyed laboratory. From Cerulean Cave, a few managed to get loose and take up residence in other routes in Kanto.
Sooo... Ditto. Any questions?

Brilliant!
For me this is one of those 'when you see it...' moments. I wish I'd thought of it.

I put up a theory thing that didn't make Anthan argue with me?
Like a boss.
Also, it seems Ditto shares a few other features with Mew. Aside from being the only two Pokemon with Transform, they also have the same weight, and the same normal/shiny colors of pink/blue. The more you know!

... The only horror movie blob from space I know of is THE Blob...
For that matter, Ditto isn't much of a horror movie blob, unless Smosh is to be believed. >.>

Re: Theory On Ditto
That's definately a nice theory, and it does seem to make sense if you put it that way. The question is, did the creators actually put that much thought into it so as to allow such a theory to be accurate? Of course, contemplating that question takes away the fun of trying to come up with your own theories regarding a fictional universe, so long as nothing is officially stated to refute said theories.
